Tian Shan Tianchi: A Highland Lake Beneath Bogda Peak
A patch of blue at the foot of the snow peak
Past Fukang and up into the Tianshan, as the road climbs near two thousand metres, a lake suddenly appears in the hollow. Tianchi is narrow east-west and long north-south, over a hundred metres at its deepest, fed by snowmelt so clear you count the stones below. Behind it Bogda Peak keeps its snow cap, and its reflection is one of Xinjiang’s signature views.

From the Yaochi of the Queen Mother
Old books name this the Yaochi, where King Mu of Zhou is said to have feasted with the Queen Mother of the West. From the Tang, Silk Road travellers passed by; Mongol and Uyghur herders worshipped it as a sacred lake. In the Qianlong reign the court built the Yaochi temple on the shore, folding the water into the state’s ritual map.

Tianchi in numbers
The lake sits at 1,910 m, covers about 4.9 km² and reaches 105 m deep. Towering above is Bogda Peak at 5,445 m. The mean annual temperature is around 2 °C — a true mountain climate. Listed as a key national scenic area in 1982, it joined the UNESCO list in 2013 as part of “Xinjiang Tianshan”.

Snow, forest and water in one frame
Tianchi’s beauty is in the combination: Bogda’s snow cap up top, a spruce belt around the mid-slope, and water shading through blues near the bank. A trail runs along the west shore; a slow walker covers a good third in half a day. For the full picture climb to the high viewpoint, where lake and peak fit one view.

How to get up there
From Urumqi take the Tuwu-Da expressway to Fukang, then the Tianchi spur road — about 1.5 hours self-drive. Prefer not to drive? The north-suburb bus station runs a tourist line from 07:00 to 18:00, roughly two hours. At the visitor centre board the shuttle to the shore (about 30 min), or walk the 5 km plank road if fit.

Mountain weather turns on a dime
At nearly 2,000 m most feel fine, but the viewpoint above 3,000 m calls for slow steps. The range runs through four seasons in a day, so even in summer pack a warm jacket and rain gear. The site asks for leave-no-trace — carry rubbish out — and in winter keep off the ice beyond marked areas.

Tianchi is not a tick-box sight. Morning mist on the water, afternoon shadows sliding across it — the same angle plays a different show. Give it half a day and it will hand you the quiet of snow and lake.
