Nalati Grassland: The "Sky Prairie" Hung on the Tianshan
A green sea above the spruce line
Past Xinyuan the road bends into the Tianshan; once above 2,000 m the window suddenly fills with boundless green. Nalati’s core sits near 2,200 m, cradled by a ring of spruce like a carpet hung on the slope. After June the grass rises and the wind rolls it into layer on layer of green wave.

A summer pasture that is still alive
This is no park but a working range. In summer Kazakh herders drive their flocks up and live in white yurts; children chase foals. You can still see traditional games like horse racing and goat grabbing, and on festivals the whole valley comes alive. Respect the herders and don’t wander into fenced pastures.

The Gongnaisi River and its spruce
The Gongnaisi River cuts through the meadow, its water cold and clear, the banks dense with near-black spruce. Walk the valley inward and autumn paints it: the dark green of spruce, the gold of birch and the ochre of the slope layered together. Hikers treat this valley as a natural oxygen bar.

The months when flowers rule
Nalati looks its best from June to September. The grass greens, flowers open in relays — globeflowers and irises spreading to the foot of the hills. Any earlier and snow lingers; any later the grass yellows. To dodge crowds go on a weekday; at weekends the car parks fill.

Ride a horse, sleep in a yurt
The classic way across the meadow is not on foot but on horseback. Local herders offer mounts and guides for a slow ridge walk with the whole green spread below. Some stay a night in a yurt — Milky Way at night, woken by cowbells at dawn. These cost extra, so confirm the safety gear with the host.

How to reach it from Yining
Easiest is self-drive from Yining city, about three hours down G218. Or fly to Nalati airport, 50 km from the site, then transfer; or fly to Yining and come overland. Inside, shuttles link the spots, with some legs on foot or horseback. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, and sections close in winter.

Nalati’s beauty is slow. You must park below and let the wind blow the city’s noise away before the grassland can be heard. Spend a full day and it gives more than photos — a quiet held up by green.
