Why Choose High-Speed Rail

China’s HSR is the world’s most extensive high-speed rail network at over 45,000 km. Point-to-point between city centers, no 2-hour early arrival needed, security takes 10–15 minutes, and on-time rate exceeds 95%. Beijing to Shanghai in 4.5 hours, Beijing to Xi’an in 4.5 hours, Shanghai to Hangzhou in 1 hour — HSR makes China feel small.

How to Buy Tickets

App

12306 (website/app) is the only official channel — foreigners can register with a passport. Trip.com offers an English interface and accepts foreign credit cards, with a service fee of ~¥15–30/ticket. Tickets go on sale 30 days ahead; for popular routes around holidays, buy on the first day of sale.

Collecting Tickets & Boarding

Use your passport at self-service kiosks to collect paper tickets, or swipe your passport directly at the gate (supported at newer stations). Security screening applies — same liquid rules as aviation. Find your platform, locate your carriage number and seat printed on the ticket, and board.
