Silk Road Adventures in Western China

The eastern Silk Road (Xi’an to Dunhuang) is well-developed with highways and hotels. West of Jiayuguan, the landscape and experience shift dramatically — patchy phone signal, gas stations over 100 km apart, and towns where Mandarin isn’t the first language. That rawness is exactly why it’s worth the effort.

This 7-10 day route runs from Dunhuang through Hami and Turpan, then along the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert through Korla, Kucha, and Aksu before reaching Kashgar. Each stop reveals a different facet of the western Silk Road.

Three must-visits: Kizil Caves (300 years older than Mogao, stunning blue-green frescoes, 75 RMB), Kashgar Old City (labyrinthine alleys with coppersmiths and naan ovens, plus the massive Sunday livestock bazaar), and Tianshan Grand Canyon near Kucha (red sandstone cliffs with passages only 0.4 meters wide, 50 RMB).

Driving tips: fill up before leaving any city (400 km between some gas stations), carry your passport for frequent security checkpoints (5-15 min each), and remember Xinjiang operates 2 hours behind Beijing despite using the same time zone — restaurants fill up at 8 PM, not 6 PM.

Food gets more Central Asian as you head west. Expect roasted lamb, pulled noodles, and hand-pilaf. In Kashgar, try roasted eggs and yellow noodles at the night market — unique to this region. Meals run 30-60 RMB per person.

Best time: June through September. Budget for 10 days: 6000-8000 RMB by self-drive, 5000-7000 by hired car (excluding flights). Fly into Dunhuang and out of Kashgar to avoid backtracking.
