Jingdezhen Ceramics Souvenir Buying Guide
Jingdezhen Ceramics Souvenir Guide
Jingdezhen is the world’s porcelain capital with a thousand years of unbroken kiln fire. Buying ceramics here is the most authentic souvenir shopping experience.
Types of Ceramics
Blue-and-white porcelain — white base with blue patterns, Jingdezhen’s most iconic type. Yuan Dynasty blue-and-white is national-treasure-level, but modern daily-use pieces are affordable. A hand-painted blue-and-white teacup costs ¥50-200.
Famille rose — overglaze porcelain with rich, soft colors that peaked during the Qing Yongzheng period. Vases and decorative pieces are most common, from ¥200.

Monochrome glaze — single-color glazed porcelain in shades like celadon, cowpea red, and sacrificial blue. Minimalist and elegant, very popular with modern aesthetics.
Contemporary creative ceramics — original works by young potters with avant-garde forms balancing utility and art. Most concentrated at Taoxichuan Creative District.
Where to Shop
Taoxichuan Creative District — a creative park converted from old porcelain factories. Friday and Saturday nights host a “creative market” where young potters sell original works — genuine treasure hunting.
Guomao Mall Ceramics Street — everything from daily-use to art porcelain, bargaining expected. Shops on the second floor and above are cheaper than ground level.
Packing and Shipping
Jingdezhen shops are experienced packers. Small items in foam paper + rigid boxes fit in luggage. For large or multiple pieces, have the shop ship via courier — SF Express ground shipping takes about two weeks domestically. International shipping is also available (but buy insurance).
Tips: How to distinguish hand-painted from machine-printed: hand-painted lines vary in thickness with slight irregularities; machine-printed patterns are perfectly uniform. Check the bottom — hand-painted pieces usually bear the potter’s signature.
